What it is
One certificate for a cross-border estate
A European Certificate of Succession (ECS) is an official document issued under EU Regulation No. 650/2012, designed to make it easier for heirs, legatees and executors to prove their rights to an estate across EU member states. Using an ECS avoids duplicating national procedures in each country and simplifies the administration of a cross-border estate. The certificate is recognised in all EU member states except Denmark and Ireland (the United Kingdom is no longer an EU member state).
We combine knowledge of Polish and Swedish law with EU succession rules, so we can advise you wherever you, or the estate’s assets, are located.
Our services
How we help
Advice on formal requirements
We explain what information and documents are needed to apply for a European Certificate of Succession in Poland or another EU country.
Preparing and filing the application
We help gather the required documents, such as a death certificate, will and proof of kinship, and file the application with the competent district court or notary in Poland.
International coordination
Where the estate involves assets in several countries, we liaise with foreign authorities and work with local experts and lawyers to keep the process on track.
Using the certificate
Once issued, we advise on how to use the ECS effectively to enforce inheritance rights, divide assets, or complete formalities in other member states.
We also arrange the certified translations needed to present documents to the relevant authorities. For wills, estates and succession proceedings, see Inheritance & Succession Law.
